Galettes are a wonderful alternative to a pie when you’re craving one and don’t feel like making an actual pie. This Easy Apple Galette recipe makes the best fruit dessert with a rustic look. It is an apple pie without the pie pan! This Easy Apple Galette is a rustic apple pie dessert that is simple and easy to make. A pretty and easy apple galette that combines a flaky, buttery, rustic crust with sweet, cinnamon-spiced apples.

This is as delicious and impressive as an apple pie, but half the work. This delicious and easy Apple galette is simple to make and becomes an impressive perfect dessert for family dinners or dinner parties. This easy apple galette is filled with sweet, crisp apples tossed in a light cinnamon sugar coating and wrapped in flaky pastry dough. A drizzle of salted caramel sauce when it comes out of the oven takes it over the edge. If you’ve never made a galette before, it’s actually much easier than making a pie. With flaky pastry and sweet cinnamon spiced apples– you seriously can’t go wrong with this easy apple dessert. The crust begins the same as a pie, with the same basic pantry ingredients. The apple pieces are a bit thinner, but with only a bottom crust, the filling-to-crust ratio is perfect, and the flavor is delicious. There’s no crimping or complicated lattice topping and the galette bakes right on a rimmed baking sheet. So you get all the deliciousness of your favorite apple pie recipe, without the stress or hassle of getting the perfect pie crust. it feels rustic and homey, and it’s the perfect dessert for sharing with your family.

The apples for baking should have a good balance of sweet and tart flavors. You can even use two types of apples together to create a good sweet-tart balance and a balance in the textures. Choose a crisp, flavorful apple like granny smith or Gala. I’ve used three Gala apples in this easy apple galette recipe. Keep the filling flat and compact, while leaving a 2-3 inch border so you can fold the edges over. Brushing the egg wash over the crust will ensure a pretty crust that has browned nicely.

The apple galette is best served warm right out of the oven. You may drizzle it with some salted caramel sauce or consider adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate indulgence. You can also serve the apple tart at room temperature with some whipped cream on top. Or if you prefer, warm it slightly and serve as is. Either way, it’s delicious.

Ingredients to make this Easy Apple Galette

For the crust:

All-purpose flour– 2 & ½ cup
Salt – ½ teaspoon
Sugar – 3 tablespoon
Butter – ¾ cup, ice cold, cubed
Water – ½ cup, ice cold

For the filling:

Gala Apples – 3, peeled, cored, and sliced thin
Cinnamon powder – 1 teaspoon
Sugar – ¼ cup
Lemon juice – juice of 1 lemon
All-purpose flour – 2 tablespoon

For the egg wash:

Egg – 1

How to Make this Easy Apple Galette

To make the apple galette, we ready the apples for the filling first and leave them to sweat while we proceed with the crust dough

Getting the apples ready: Peel, core, and slice the apples to 1/8 of an inch thickness. Toss the apple slices with ¼ cup granulated sugar, juice of one lemon, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder. Leave it to rest on the counter while you proceed with the crust dough.
Making the galette crust dough: Use cold butter right out of the refrigerator to make the crust. In a large bowl, add 2 & ½ cup flour, ½ teaspoon salt, and 3 tablespoons of sugar and mix. To this add ¾ cup of ice cold butter which is cubed. Rub the butter into the flour until it forms a bread crumb texture. You could also blend flour, sugar, salt, and cubed cold butter in a food processor to form a bread crumb texture. Add cold water one tablespoon at a time and bring the dough together. Do not knead the dough. Cover the dough in cling film and refrigerate.
Preparing the apple filling: Meanwhile, the apples must have released their juices. Add 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and mix it in.
Assembling the galette: Preheat the oven to 190 C. Roll the dough, directly on the parchment paper, into a 15-inch circle about 1/6 inch thick. It’s fine if the edges are a little ragged. Arrange the apples into the center of the dough leaving a border of about 2-3 inches. Then fold over the edges, overlapping the dough as necessary. Fold the edges over the apples in a free-form fashion, working your way around and creating pleats as you go. In a small bowl, beat an egg and brush the edges of the crust with it to help them get nice and golden brown. Transfer the parchment sheet containing the assembled galette to a baking sheet.
Baking the apple galette: Bake the galette in a preheated oven at 190 C for 45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling. Drizzle it with salted caramel sauce when it comes out of the oven. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
